A sore throat can be painful and worrying – especially for parents. The good news? Most sore throats get better without needing antibiotics. If you’d like fast, expert advice without booking a GP appointment, our NHS Sore Throat Service in Neath is here to help.

This service is completely free on the NHS and available at either of our two pharmacy branches.

What Causes a Sore Throat?

Sore throats are usually caused by a virus, like a cold or the flu. These often clear up in a few days with rest and fluids. Sometimes, sore throats are caused by bacteria, such as Strep A, which may benefit from antibiotics – but not always.

Common Sore Throat Symptoms:

  • Pain when swallowing
  • Swollen glands in the neck
  • Fever or raised temperature
  • Headache or tiredness
  • Hoarseness
  • White patches on the tonsils (sometimes)

Most sore throats improve in 7 to 8 days.

Try Our NHS Sore Throat Service – Two Convenient Neath Locations

Our trained pharmacists can assess children aged 5+ and adults, with no GP needed.

You can visit us at either location:

📍 The Health Dispensary (Victoria Gardens) – Appointments preferred
📍 Neath Pharmacy (Town Centre) – Walk-ins welcome (subject to availability)

Here’s what to expect:

✅ Symptom check and temperature reading
✅ A gentle throat swab to test for Strep A if needed
✅ Clinical scoring during the consultation
Antibiotics only if clinically appropriate

Even if the swab is positive, antibiotics may not be needed unless symptoms and scoring support it. We always take a careful, evidence-based approach to treatment.

Do I Really Need Antibiotics?

Not in most cases. Viral infections clear up on their own. Antibiotics are only helpful – and safe – when used for the right bacterial infections.

Overusing antibiotics can:

  • Cause side effects like rashes or tummy upset
  • Lead to antibiotic resistance, making future infections harder to treat

That’s why we combine testing with professional judgement before prescribing.

How to Help Your Child Feel Better

✔ Rest and warmth
✔ Plenty of fluids – even if swallowing is sore
✔ Children’s paracetamol or ibuprofen for pain relief
✔ Cold treats like ice lollies can soothe the throat
✔ Keep them away from smoke or dry air

📌 Tip: Even small sips of water can ease tiredness and help headaches.

When to Get Urgent Medical Help

🚨 Contact your GP or call 111 if your child:

  • Has trouble breathing
  • Can’t swallow saliva
  • Has a very high temperature that isn’t coming down
  • Has one-sided throat pain that’s severe
  • Looks pale or feels unusually cold
  • Seems very unwell, confused, or you suspect sepsis

These signs are rare but important to recognise.
