What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a condition where your body struggles to regulate blood sugar (glucose). When sugar levels stay high over time, it can increase the risk of complications affecting your:

  • heart
  • kidneys
  • nerves
  • eyes
  • circulation

The main types include:

Type 1 diabetes

An autoimmune condition, often diagnosed earlier in life. People with type 1 diabetes need insulin from diagnosis.

Type 2 diabetes

Far more common and often linked to age, weight, family history, ethnicity and lifestyle. It tends to develop gradually and is often preventable or easier to manage when caught early.

Pre-diabetes

Also known as non-diabetic hyperglycaemia. This is when your blood sugar is raised but not high enough for a diabetes diagnosis. Catching pre-diabetes early can make a huge difference — and in many cases can help prevent type 2 diabetes.

Why early detection matters

Many people live with rising blood sugar for months (or years) without realising. Symptoms can be subtle — and easy to blame on stress or a busy life.

You might consider a diabetes check if you’ve noticed:

  • tiredness that doesn’t improve with rest
  • increased thirst or needing to wee more often
  • blurred vision
  • slow healing, frequent infections, or feeling “run down”
  • unexpected weight changes

Regular checks are especially important if you:

  • are over 40
  • have a family history of diabetes
  • are overweight or carry weight around the middle
  • have high blood pressure or raised cholesterol
  • are South Asian, African-Caribbean or Black African
  • have had gestational diabetes or PCOS

The earlier diabetes or pre-diabetes is identified, the easier it is to take action and reduce the risk of future complications.

Diabetes testing in Neath: why HbA1c is the test to choose

Many people are familiar with a finger-prick glucose check. That measures your blood sugar right now — and can be influenced by your last meal, stress, illness or even a poor night’s sleep.

If you want a more meaningful picture, HbA1c is the gold-standard test used to assess longer-term blood sugar control.

At The Health Dispensary in Neath, our 15-minute HbA1c blood test gives you clear results quickly — with pharmacist guidance on what they mean and what to do next.

What is HbA1c?

HbA1c measures the percentage of glucose attached to your red blood cells. Because red blood cells live for around 3 months, HbA1c reflects your average blood sugar over the last 2–3 months.

Why HbA1c is so helpful

  • More reliable than a single “snapshot” glucose test
  • No fasting required
  • Used widely for monitoring and assessment
  • Helps identify pre-diabetes risk earlier
  • Clear results you can act on — with supportive guidance

Ready for a quick HbA1c check?

A 15-minute test can provide reassurance — or an early warning while it’s easiest to improve.

A quick test that can give real peace of mind

Your health matters — and so do the people you love. Diabetes Awareness Month is a good time to check in with yourself, or gently encourage someone close to you to do the same.

A simple HbA1c test can:

  • provide reassurance
  • help you understand your risk
  • support small, realistic lifestyle steps
  • spot a problem early, when it’s easiest to manage

Sometimes, that one small step changes everything.

Living well with diabetes

If you already live with diabetes, you’re not alone. Support today is more personalised and flexible than ever. Healthy eating, movement, medication (if needed) and regular checks all help you feel more like you.

And if your results suggest you’re in the pre-diabetes range, that’s not a reason to panic — it’s a chance to act early. We can talk you through practical next steps and helpful checks (for example, cholesterol, inflammation markers, vitamin D, and weight management support if that’s relevant to you).

FAQs

Do I need to fast for an HbA1c test?

No — HbA1c does not usually require fasting because it reflects your average blood sugar over the last 2–3 months.

Is an HbA1c test better than a finger-prick glucose test?

They measure different things. A glucose test is a snapshot of your blood sugar at that moment. HbA1c shows your longer-term average, which is often more useful when you’re checking risk or patterns.

What happens if my result is raised?

We’ll explain what it means, what to do next, and whether you should speak to your GP for further assessment. We can also support lifestyle steps and appropriate follow-up testing.
