Real food for healthy weight loss
Is Quinoa Good for GLP-1 Weight Loss?
Quinoa for GLP-1 weight loss can be a useful addition to smaller,
balanced meals. It provides plant protein, fibre and useful nutrients, making it
a practical choice when medicines such as Wegovy® or Mounjaro® have reduced your appetite.

sesame seeds, ham and mozzarella.
Today’s lunch at the pharmacy
This was today’s lunch between clinics: tricolour quinoa, crisp lettuce from
the salad patch, juicy tomatoes, grated carrot, fresh basil, ham wrapped around
mozzarella and a sprinkle of sesame seeds.
Nothing complicated and certainly not thought of as a “diet meal”. It was
simply colourful, enjoyable food that gave me a mixture of protein, fibre and
flavour while helping me stay satisfied through a busy afternoon of prescribing.
What exactly is quinoa?
Although quinoa is usually prepared and eaten like a grain, it is technically
an edible seed. It originated in the Andean region of South America and comes
in several colours, including white, red and black.
Quinoa is often described as a complete plant protein because it
contains all nine essential amino acids. These are amino acids our bodies cannot
produce for themselves and therefore need to obtain through food.
8g protein + 5g fibre
According to Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, one cooked cup of
quinoa provides approximately 8 grams of protein and
5 grams of fibre.
It also provides nutrients including magnesium, phosphorus, manganese,
folate and thiamine.
Why quinoa can work well with GLP-1 medicines
Medicines such as Wegovy® and Mounjaro® can reduce
hunger and help people feel satisfied with smaller amounts of food. That can support
weight loss, but it also makes the nutritional quality of those smaller meals
particularly important.
Eating less shouldn’t mean surviving on a few crackers, relying on protein shakes or filling your shopping basket with ultra-processed “high-protein” products. Your body still needs real food that provides protein, fibre, vitamins, minerals and healthy fats to support your overall health.
Plant protein
Quinoa adds some protein to a meal and works well alongside eggs, fish,
chicken, beans, yoghurt, cheese or tofu.
Useful fibre
Fibre supports normal bowel health and may help meals feel more satisfying,
although it is best increased gradually.
Easy portions
A small scoop adds texture and substance without requiring an enormous
plate of food when appetite is lower.
Protein matters during GLP-1 weight loss
During weight loss, the aim is usually to reduce body fat while retaining as
much muscle as possible. Adequate protein, together with suitable strength or
resistance activity, can help support muscle maintenance.
One thing I often hear in clinic…
Many people assume they need protein shakes, protein bars and heavily processed
“high-protein” foods when starting Wegovy® or Mounjaro®. These products can be
useful occasionally, but most people can meet their needs through ordinary,
enjoyable foods.
Quinoa contributes protein, but it should not necessarily be treated as the
entire protein portion of a meal. A helpful approach is to combine it with
another protein-rich food.
A simple way to build a balanced GLP-1-friendly meal
Colour and fibre
Salad, vegetables or fruit you enjoy
Main protein
Fish, eggs, chicken, dairy, beans or tofu
Quinoa portion
A smaller serving adjusted to your appetite
In my lunch, the quinoa was combined with ham, mozzarella and sesame seeds.
Someone else might choose quinoa with salmon, boiled eggs, chickpeas, tofu,
chicken or Greek-style yoghurt.
The aim is not to chase the highest possible protein number. It is to build
smaller meals from real foods that provide protein alongside fibre, vitamins,
minerals and enjoyment.
Can quinoa help with constipation?
Constipation can occur in some people using GLP-1 or GIP/GLP-1 medicines.
Quinoa contains fibre, so it can contribute to an eating pattern that supports
healthy bowel function.
However, suddenly eating a very large amount of fibre can cause bloating,
wind or abdominal discomfort, particularly when digestion already feels slower.
It is usually more comfortable to increase fibre gradually and drink enough fluid.
💡 A gentle GLP-1 tip
Start with a modest portion of cooked quinoa rather than filling half the bowl.
Eat slowly, stop when comfortably satisfied and see how your digestion responds.
You can always have more another time.
What was in my quinoa lunch bowl?
- Tricolour quinoa
- Crisp lettuce
- Juicy tomatoes
- Grated carrot
- Fresh basil
- Ham wrapped around mozzarella
- Sesame seeds
Fresh basil added plenty of flavour without needing a heavy dressing, while
the sesame seeds provided a little extra texture and crunch. You could easily
adapt this bowl using whatever vegetables and protein foods you already have.
A real-life question
“If I’m eating much less on Wegovy or Mounjaro, does it really matter what I choose?”
Yes. When your appetite is reduced, there may be fewer opportunities during
the day to obtain the protein and nutrients your body needs. Smaller meals
should still be balanced and nourishing.
You do not need to make every plate perfect, but regularly choosing a source
of protein, some vegetables or fruit, a fibre-containing food and enough fluid
can make a meaningful difference.
Is quinoa better than rice?
It does not have to be a competition. Both quinoa and rice can form part of a
balanced diet, and the best choice will depend on taste, tolerance, portion size
and what else is in the meal.
Quinoa has the advantage of contributing more protein and fibre than many plain
refined grains. However, it still contains carbohydrate and energy, so calling
it a “superfood” does not make portions irrelevant.
Quinoa is nutritious—but it is not magic
No individual food causes weight loss. Quinoa cannot overcome consistently large
portions, an unbalanced diet or a lack of suitable clinical support.
What it can do is provide a versatile foundation for meals that include protein,
plants and fibre. That makes it useful—not miraculous.
- Choose a portion that suits your reduced appetite.
- Combine quinoa with a meaningful source of protein.
- Add vegetables, herbs and flavour you genuinely enjoy.
- Increase fibre gradually if your usual intake is low.
- Keep drinking regularly, even when you feel less hungry.
- Seek clinical advice if digestive symptoms become persistent.
Final thoughts
Healthy eating while using a GLP-1 medicine does not need to mean tiny,
joyless plates or an endless supply of protein shakes.
A simple meal such as this quinoa bowl can provide colour, texture, protein
and fibre while still feeling light enough for a smaller appetite.
The important part is not whether a meal looks perfect. It is whether it is
nourishing, manageable, enjoyable and something you could realistically eat again.

A note from Ali
I’m often asked what I eat while spending long days in clinic, and the honest answer is that there isn’t one “perfect” meal. I don’t eat quinoa every day, and I certainly don’t believe in miracle foods.
What I do believe in is building meals around real, enjoyable ingredients that provide a good balance of protein, fibre and nutrients. Many people starting Wegovy® or Mounjaro® worry that they need to live on protein shakes or expensive “high-protein” products, but in most cases everyday foods can provide everything your body needs.
If this article encourages you to build one balanced meal from real ingredients rather than automatically reaching for another processed snack or shake, then it’s done exactly what I hoped.
